Tips for Relieving Eyestrain and Headaches
Do you suffer from frequent headaches while at work? Do your eyes feel tired and worn out by the end of the day? These may indicate that you suffer from eye strain. A few other symptoms include blurred or double vision, eye pain, watery eyes, dry eyes, a burning sensation when closing your eyes, heaviness of the eyelids, achiness around the eyebrows, and a twitch in the eyelids. Eye strain is often caused by focusing on a single object for too long, poor lighting, glare and vision problems.
Consider these useful tips for finding relief from eye strain and preventing future pain:
- Adjust your monitor height – The ideal setup for your monitor is directly in front of you, at eye level, about your arm’s length away.A monitor riser is simple to install and can provide the height you need for a more comfortable view. Also, confirm that your screen is the correct distance from your eyes for optimum focus. It should be a full arm’s length away from your body, while your back is firmly against your chair.
- Blink often – Blinking will help keep your eyes hydrated, reducing soreness and irritation. If your eyes continue to be dry and scratchy, talk to your pharmacist or doctor about over-the-counter eye-drops.
- Look up – Every ten minutes stop your work to refocus your eyes. Look at something in the distance, about 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds.
- Take a vision break – Take about a minute each hour to completely rest your eyes. Just close your eyes and relax. This can noticeably ease the muscle strain in your eyes.
- Eliminate glare – Adjust the lighting or window coverings to assure that there is no direct reflection or glare on your screen. If you are unable to eliminate the glare, use a glare filter. For best results, always keep your monitor clean and free of dust and debris.
- Use a document holder – A document holder can reduce the work on your eyes, neck, and shoulders while typing. Make sure to place your document as close to your monitor as possible and at the same distance away from your eyes. This will reduce any focus changes for your eyes.
- Put on sunglasses – Use sunglasses while you working outside or driving a vehicle. Locate a good pair that will eliminate glare and provide 100% protection from ultraviolet radiation.
- Get an Eye Exam – Eye strain is most effectively relieved by rest. If you continue to suffer discomfort or notice a change in your vision, go in for an eye exam as soon as possible to ensure that other factors are not causing to your pain.
When your work requires you to focus on the same task for prolonged periods of time, or when you become wrapped up in a good book, you can easily strain your eyes and induce a headache. Like any muscle in your body, your eye muscles can be overworked and worn out. These tips can help you find relief from your eyestrain and headaches and following them regularly can create new habits that will protect you from future pain.
